‘Missions’

Discuss in your group the following….

When you think of ‘Missions’ what comes to mind / what does it mean to you?

Is there much difference between being involved in mission work at home and being a missionary overseas or are they both really the same?

Two dictionary definitions are….

‘A person sent on some special service’ and

‘Ones task in life’.

When you listened to Keith speak on Sunday and saw the power point, etc. which he shared was there anything in particular that stood out and that God spoke to you about?

Answer the following….

What did Jesus do? Read Philippians 2:5-11, Mark 10:45.

Why did He come? Luke 19:10, 5:31-32.

What else did He say in quoting Isaiah’s prophecy? Luke 4:18-19.

As Paul shared with King Agrippa Jesus’ calling on his life to mission work what were the things Jesus told Paul would be doing? Acts 26:17-18.

Read some of Jesus last words to His disciples. Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8.

Discuss the content of these verses and how they apply to us today.

What did he mean ‘to make disciples’?

How does ‘….you will be my witnesses in …. Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth,’ apply to us today?

What was Paul’s motivation? See 2nd Corinthians 5: 11, 14, 20.

Do Christians need to go to another country or culture to be a missionary/do mission work?

Consider and discuss the following passages and how they apply to your life….

· Romans 10:9-17.

· 1Peter 2:9.

· John 4:28-30, 39-42.

· 1 Peter 3:15-16.

· Matthew 5:13-16.

Can think of any other relevant passages?

3. Supporting missionaries who are sent out to another culture/country or going yourself and being supported.

Discuss the following….

‘Tom said, ‘There was a time when I held back from unconditionally surrendering my life to Jesus as Lord because I had the fear that if I did He might send me overseas to some back block country as a missionary.’

Do you or have you ever felt like Tom? Are you open to God and willing to do overseas missionary work short or long term if He was to guide you in that direction?

What are some things that could hold people back and what are the solutions?

How can we help current missionaries?

Read Paul’s words of appreciation to the Philippians for their invaluable support to him. Philippians 1:7-8, 4:1, 15-20.

Discuss the difference we can make as we support missionaries.

Do you have a passion to see those lost hear about and turn to Christ to save them?

Revisit Paul’s motivation in 2 Corinthians 5: 11, 14, 20.
