This week’s study is about,

The Holy Spirit”

The Apostles’ Creed, ‘ I believe in ….the Holy Ghost (Spirit)…’

When you think of the Holy Spirit what comes to mind?

The last two weeks we have looked at God the Father and God the Son.

Do you know as much about the Holy Spirit?

If your answer is no, why do you think this is so?

Let’s look at the important basic truths the Bible teaches us.

1. Is the Holy Spirit God?

Discuss your findings according to the following passages.

Who is the third person of the Trinity? Matthew 28:19.

Read what Peter said to when confronting Ananias. Acts 5:3-4.

Read and discuss the Holy Spirit’s characteristics. Psalm 139:7-8,

1Corinthians 2:10-11, Hebrews 9:14, Genesis 1:2, Luke 1:35, Romans 1:4.

2. Is the Holy Spirit a Person?

The Jehovah Witnesses teach He just a force. What are the traits mentioned in the following passages that you attribute to a person?

· Romans 15:30.

· Acts 8:29.

· 1Corinthians 12:11.

· Acts 5:3.

· Ephesians 4:30.

· Hebrews 10:29.

· Romans 8:26-27.

What is the significance of Jesus referring to Him not as an ‘it’ but ‘He’? John 15:26, John 16:13-14.

What conclusion do you come to? Share and discuss in your group.

3. What is the work the Holy Spirit does?

A. To the unsaved.

Read John 16:5-11.

What was going to happen when Jesus went back to glory?

What were the three things Holy Spirit was going to do regarding the people of the world?

How important is it for us to be aware of these and what the Holy Spirit wants to do through us as we witness and communicate the gospel to the unsaved?

B. To the saved.

What happens when someone puts their faith in Christ and becomes God’s child?

Galatians 4:6-7, Romans 8:10-11.

What does the Holy Spirit bring and do?

Read and discuss what Paul shares in Ephesians 1:13-14, 4:30,

2nd Corinthians 1:22.

Also Romans 8:15-17.

What assurance does this give you?

What important point does Paul make in Romans 8:9b?

Read John 16:14. Who will the Holy Spirit glorify?

C. To help us to grow.

What else does the Bible say the Holy Spirit will do for God’s children?

· 2nd Corinthians 3:18.

· John 14:16-17. What are other words for ‘Advocate?’

· Romans 8:26-27.

· John 16:13.

· 1st Corinthians 2:10-16.

· Ephesians 5:18. How are we ‘filled with the Spirit?’

What the things that hinder this? See Ephesians 4:30 and 1Thessalonians 5:19.

What is the difference between these two?

What is the result of being ‘filled with the Spirit?’ See Galatians 5:22-23.

D. To help us be His witnesses.

Why did Jesus say His disciple should wait until the promised Holy Spirit came?

Acts 1:4-5,8.

What did Paul do as he shared the gospel? 1Corinthians 2:1-5.

Discuss in your group the importance of this for us today in order for us to be effective witnesses.

E. Are there any things this study has helped you with growing in your knowledge of the Holy Spirit?

How will this help you rely on Him more fully to effectively and fruitfully live out your relationship with Christ to God’s glory?

Share with your group.
