The word trinity is not used in the Bible, it is a word which Christians have made up to describe what they see is the situation.
To believe in the Trinity is to say that there is only One God, but that God has three persons. Father Son and Spirit.
God himself claims that there is only One of Him. Have a look at Isaiah:
There is only one God. But He is three persons.
What makes a person a person. Well for one thing a person thinks and has emotions.
I am not talking about personalities, for one person can have several personalities.
So how is the Holy Spirit a person? We can grieve Him: Ephesians 4:30. You can’t grieve a thing, only a person.
The Holy Spirit has some sort of separation or apartness from God the Father for Paul tells us the Spirit prays to the Father for us. Romans 8;26.
We do not need to prove to ourselves that Jesus Christ was a person, for he did all the person things we do, except sinning. What we need to see is that Jesus is God, as well as man.
Jesus is proclaimed to be God by the Bible. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God. There is so much in this verse. In the beginning means when the beginning began the Word already existed. The Word was with God, tells us that they weren’t the exact same thing. You can’t be with yourself. The Word we are told was God. If you read on this opening section of John’s Gospel you will see he is talking about Jesus. Here he is saying Jesus if God. Jesus allowed men to worship him, without telling them to stop. No one else did this in the Bible. John 20:28. And Thomas said to him, “My lord and my God.” Jesus never said stop saying that, for I am not God, as the angel did in Revelation when John bowed down to him. Revelation 19:10. At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellows servant with you and with your brothers who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony is the Spirit of prophecy.”
So to sum up. God tells us that there is only One God. Yet it is obvious that the Holy Spirit is a person in his own right, and that the Son of God accepted worship as God.
So we conclude that there is one God who is three persons. Yes it is hard to understand but that doesn’t mean we should believe it. Do you understand how a TV works? I doubt it. And how on earth does a computer printer take messages which tells it just how much of which colour ink to squirt on the page to produce a colourful picture. Yet we believe they do it.
