This week’s study is titled,

“The Gospel, how much has it changed you?”

As we go through this study ask yourself the question, ‘How much has the Gospel message influenced and changed me?’

We will be focusing on a couple of key areas.

1. The Gospel.

Firstly, what is the Gospel which the Apostle Paul said….

‘…. is the Power of God at work saving everyone who believes….’ Romans 1:16.

Write down approximately five key points (and Bible passages if you know them) you would use to explain the essence of the Gospel message.

1……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

2……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

3……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

4……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

5……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

What happens to someone who believes the Gospel message and puts their faith in Jesus Christ? 2nd Corinthians 5:17.

What is God’s goal for all His children individually and as part of His church?

Romans 8:29, Ephesians 4:13-15.

Read the assurance Paul gives that God will help us. Philippians 2:13.

Discuss the importance of the two things he mentions.

.

Read the preceding verse. Philippians 2:12.

What are we to do?

How are we to do this and what is the right attitude (with this assurance fresh in our minds) we should have towards God?

Consider also Romans 2:29.

Let’s look at two key areas where we can do this.

2. Forgiveness.

Read Matthew 18:21-35. Discuss the following questions.

· What did the servant deserve because of his huge debt, according to the custom of the day?

· What was the king’s response to the servant when he begged for patience?

· How did the forgiven servant respond to the generosity of the king’s forgiveness?

· Why do you think he acted in this way towards his fellow servant?

· What did the king say when he found out about all that had happened?

Revisit Philippians 2:12-13.

Discuss the importance of having the right motive to ‘….work hard to show the results of your salvation….’ so that your actions are not based on legalism.

Have there been times you have found it hard to forgive someone who has hurt you or others.

Discuss and share in your group ways that have helped you to ‘….forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.’ Matthew 18:35.

3. Pride.

What is the basis of pride?

Read Jesus story in Luke 18:9-14.

Discuss who went home justified and why. Luke 18:14.

Consider Paul’s words in Romans 3:19-20.

Read what Jesus said to….

· The Pharisees who focussed on looking good on the outside so others would praise them but were the opposite inside. Matthew 23:25-28

.

· Those who were looked down on in society but in their hearts had turned to the Lord and been forgiven. Luke 7:36-50, Matthew 9:9-13.

What is our attitude towards those who have deliberately chosen to or though wrong company been caught up in an alternate lifestyle of worldly ‘loose living’ where ‘anything goes’ and as a result are trapped in addictive behaviour and habits such as drugs, sex, gambling, etc?

How would you respond if they approached you or came into our church looking for help?

Refer to the principle written about in James 2:1-9.

Discuss your thoughts and possible actions.

How has the Gospel (God’s love for you) influenced your willing forgiveness, love for others and resulting loving deeds whether they are deserving of them or not?
